29.5 is nominal outside diameter

Inches, measured on the whole tire rather than the wheel. Going from 29.5 to 32.5 raises the axle about an inch and a half and moves the top of the tire three inches closer to the fender.

9.5 is nominal tire width

A 29.5x9.5-14 and a 29.5x11-14 mount on the same wheel diameter and do not occupy the same space. The wider one sits closer to control arms, tie rods and the inner fender.

14 is the wheel the tire needs

Not a preference. A 34.5x10.5-16 will not mount on a 14-inch wheel, which is why that size turns into a wheel purchase as well as a tire purchase.

Narrow front and wide rear, or square

A narrower front gives the steering less rubber to push through mud, and a wider rear adds flotation where most of the drive load lands. The classic pairing is 29.5x9.5-14 up front with 29.5x11-14 behind. Polaris went the other way on the 2023 Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition and fitted 30x9.5 at all four corners, which also makes rotation simple. Steering clearance and wheel offset decide it, not a rule of thumb.

The number on the sidewall is nominal

Mounted diameter shifts with wheel width, inflation pressure, load and normal manufacturing tolerance. Two 29.5-inch tires on different rims can measure differently on the machine. Check clearance against the tire you actually have, through full suspension travel and full steering lock, rather than against the size printed on the casing.

Which Outlaw 2 Size Your Machine Can Take

A stock-height ATV or UTV

The 28-inch pair is where most unmodified machines land. Check the front first, since steering sweep usually runs out of room before the rear does. Polaris lists 28x9.5-14 and 28x11-14 as replacement tires for applicable High Lifter Edition machines.

29.5

A modest lift, or a machine that came big

The 29.5 and 30-inch sizes cover most lifted trail machines and several factory High Lifter Edition builds. Clearance at full compression and full lock decides it, not the measurement taken with the machine parked at ride height.

32.5

A build, not a bolt-on

Fitting 32.5s usually pulls in a lift, forward-offset A-arms, wheel offset changes and clutch calibration. At 56 pounds a corner the tire also asks more of the axles, bearings and belt than the machine was set up to give.

34.5

The deep end

A 34.5x10.5-16 needs 16-inch wheels and a machine already built around it. Portal gear lifts show up here for two reasons: ground clearance, and the hub reduction that gives back some of the torque a tire this tall takes away.

What the extra diameter costs

Stepping from the 39-pound 28x9.5-14 to the 56-pound 32.5x10.5-14 adds 17 pounds per corner, roughly 68 pounds across the machine before the wheels change. None of it behaves like weight strapped to a cargo rack. Tires are unsprung, most of that mass also rotates, and the suspension now has more to control over every bump.

Diameter changes the gearing too. Moving from a 27-inch tire to a 32.5 adds about 20 percent to the circumference, so the drivetrain effectively gets 20 percent taller with nothing else touched. Expect softer initial acceleration, more heat through a CVT, less engine braking and more load on axles and belt. Clutch calibration, gearing changes or portal reductions give some of that back.

What the Outlaw 2 Tread Actually Does

Lugs that paddle instead of grip

Each lug uses a cupped, scooped face rather than the square block of a trail tire. Lug height reaches roughly 2.5 inches and lug width about 1.75 inches depending on size and location, so the tread moves mud rearward instead of relying on friction against something solid.

Tread that runs to the rim

Outlaw 2 carries usable tread down the side of the casing rather than ending at a smooth sidewall. Drop into a narrow rut and those side lugs reach the rut wall after the center tread has lost contact with anything firm. That full sidewall tread is what separated this generation from the original Outlaw.

A flatter face than a tractor tire

Many extreme mud tires crown sharply, so only a narrow strip touches down on firm ground. High Lifter kept the Outlaw 2 profile flatter, which puts more lugs on the surface between holes. It stays a mud tire, but the transitions are less awkward.

Where Outlaw 2 Tires Work, and Where They Don't

Deep mud

This is the surface the tread was drawn around. Open voids leave displaced material somewhere to go, so the tire keeps exposing fresh biting edges instead of packing into a slick.

Where it stops: Throttle control still decides the outcome. Enough wheel speed liquefies the ground underneath and drops the chassis onto its frame.

Rutted trails

Ruts are where the sidewall tread earns its weight. As the center sinks, tread along the side of the casing finds the rut wall, and steering input brings more shoulder into play.

Where it stops: Ground clearance sets a hard limit. Once the skid plate or differential carries the machine, more traction moves nothing.

Water-filled holes

Scooped lugs keep moving material through water-covered mud where a square block tread has almost nothing to push against. The effect is a row of small paddles spread around the tire.

Where it stops: Depth is a machine question before it is a tire question. Intake height, differential and transmission vents, electrical sealing and hidden drop-offs all come first.

Hardpack and packed trail

The flatter profile puts more lug surface down than a sharply crowned mud tire, so crossing a firm section between mud holes stays manageable.

Where it stops: Long abrasive miles burn expensive tread without using it. A machine that spends most of its time on packed trail is better matched to Outlaw M/T.

Rocks and roots

Large tread edges catch irregular surfaces well enough to make useful grip on loose rock and exposed roots.

Where it stops: Rock-focused designs use denser tread and a carcass that wraps around obstacles. High Lifter Roctane ST and STX exist for that job.

Sand

Outlaw 2 moves through loose material, and the lugs generate real forward thrust once the machine is underway.

Where it stops: A deep lug that digs is not automatically what sand wants. Dune riding rewards flotation and controlled wheel speed, so a dedicated paddle setup wins on sand alone.

Snow

Deep loose snow behaves enough like mud that the tall open tread digs and clears where shallow trail tread packs over and glazes.

Where it stops: Packed snow and ice are a different surface. No siping means none of the small biting edges a winter-specific tire relies on.

Outlaw Max carries the idea forward

Max keeps the extreme-mud depth on an 8-ply carcass and spreads it across a tread footprint about 10 inches wide, with center lugs that overlap to smooth out trail transitions. Outlaw 2 stays the traditional choice: a 6-ply bias casing with the deepest scoops and the full sidewall wrap.

Outlaw M/T trades depth for range

M/T gives up most of the lug height, running 0.80 to 1.25 inches of dual-stage tread on a 10-ply-rated radial. Deep shoulder lugs still handle ruts. For a machine crossing long trail sections between mud holes that compromise pays off, and for one built around the mud it does not.

Replacing OEM Outlaw 2 Tires on a Polaris

Outlaw 2 was never only an aftermarket upgrade. Polaris fitted these tires to High Lifter Edition machines across Sportsman and RZR applications, which splits Outlaw 2 buyers into two groups with different problems.

One is building a mud machine out of a standard ATV and choosing a diameter. The other has a factory High Lifter Edition and needs the tire it came with. For the second, matching the original size is only half the job. Verify the Polaris part number against the exact model and year, since Polaris catalogs Outlaw II replacements separately from the aftermarket OL2 SKUs.

The 2023 Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition left the factory on 30x9.5 Outlaw 2 tires over 14-inch wheels. Polaris part 5416411 covers a 29.5x11.0 Outlaw II used on RZR applications.

Availability moves size by size

Outlaw 2 is a legacy design now. High Lifter's current tire material leads with Outlaw Max and Outlaw M/T, and at least one established distributor lists the original Outlaw 2 aftermarket range as discontinued. Remaining dealer inventory, OEM replacement stock and individual OL2 part numbers still turn up.

What follows from that is practical: a size that exists today may not next season, and no single channel carries the whole historical range. Match the exact size and part number rather than assuming every configuration can still be sourced.

Mounting, Rotation Direction and Pressure

The tread is directional

Scooped lugs only paddle the correct way around. Find the rotation marking on the sidewall and confirm it before the bead seats. A tire mounted backward still rolls, and it works against the shape the tread was cut for.

Let a shop mount them

A heavy casing and a stiff bead make these awkward to fit by hand, and the largest sizes are worse. Mounting and balancing at a shop costs less than a torn bead or a bent rim lip.

Maximum pressure is not target pressure

Several Outlaw 2 sizes list an 18 psi maximum. That figure is the ceiling of the tire, not a recommendation for every machine. Vehicle weight, payload, wheel, terrain and speed set the working number, checked cold. Going too low invites debeading and rim contact.

High Lifter and the Outlaw Line

High Lifter started in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1996, when Scott Smith built a lift for his father's Honda Foreman so the ATV could clear bigger tires. A weld-on idea turned into a bolt-on kit, and the evening project turned into a powersports company built around modified four-wheel-drive ATVs and UTVs.

Mud riding shaped everything that followed. The original Outlaw arrived as a dedicated ATV mud tire, then more than a decade of tire development went into its replacement. The 29.5-inch Outlaw 2 reached the market in 2011, and the design spread into the other diameters from there.

A long working relationship with Polaris put Outlaw tires onto factory High Lifter Edition machines, which is why Outlaw 2 still matters to owners hunting an exact replacement rather than shopping for any aggressive mud tire.

The name gets written several ways. High Lifter molds it into the casing as Outlaw 2, Polaris catalogs it as Outlaw II, and riders talking about a set usually say Outlaw 2s or Outlaws 2. All of them point at the same tire.

High Lifter Outlaw 2 tires are built primarily for deep mud, water-filled ruts, soft ground, and heavily churned off-road terrain. Their large cupped lugs act more like paddles than conventional trail-tire blocks, and the tread continues far down the shoulder so the tire can still find traction when the center is buried in a rut. They can be driven across ordinary trails and hardpack, but that is not their main purpose.
